Upcoming Engagements: Jesus Christ Superstar

Reed already spilled the beans, but I thought I’d go a little more in depth with details for my upcoming show!

Upcoming Engagements: Jesus Christ Superstar

It is a very excited and hopeful feeling when I have the occasion to add a show to the “upcoming engagements” section of my resume. This time, I’m pleased to share that I’ll be adding the role of Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar. The production will be presented by The Little Theatre of Norfolk over four weekends from Sept 8 – Oct 1. We will get to Norfolk at the very end of July, and I’ll commence rehearsing.

A bit about the show

Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of biblical Jesus in the final days leading up to his crucifixion. A rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the musical has no spoken dialogue and is sometimes considered a modern rock-opera. Loosely based on the Gospels, Superstar focuses on the personal conflicts between Jesus, his disciples, the people of Israel, and the leadership of Rome. Special attention is played to the relationship between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, as well as Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdalene. The musical is unique among biblical re-tellings in that it focuses on both Judas’ struggle making the decision to betray Jesus and Jesus’ human psychology, fear, and anger in understanding and accepting his role as both leader and martyr. The show is a product of its era, permeated with 1970’s rock, gospel, folk and funk themes, modern language and colloquialisms, and high-energy dance numbers.

For the first time in many years, I have been seeing doors opening. All the details and how they have worked out have been nothing short of a series of blessings confirming this path we are on.  (For example, I realized a few days ago that the day we found our RV was the same day I found the audition announcement for this show.) I am grateful and humbled.
